How to Cut the Foam for Your Cover

Supplies Needed to Complete this Task
You will need the following to cut your custom foam cushions: Foam, paper with measurements, tape measure and sharp carving knife or electric knife.

Marking the Foam - Part 1
Using the measurements you have recorded from the boat mattress or cushion cover, proceed by marking the foam. To do this, measure from the edge of the foam out to the size measured. Please see the picture to the right. Make two tick marks with a marker or grease pen for length and two tick marks for the width. Spread the tick marks for your custom cushion about 18 to 24 inches (larger if you're creating larger cushions or futons).

Marking the Foam - Part 2
Take the straight edge, align it with the tick marks and mark a straight line across the foam. Do this for both the length and width. Double check the lines on the foam against the measurements on paper with your ruler to make sure everything is correct for your new cushions before moving on to the next step.

Cutting the Foam
Be careful so that you do not injure yourself, nor damage the surface you are cutting by the cutting tool. With the marked lines, continue cutting the foam with a sharp carving knife or electric knife. If you are using a sharp carving knife, it is best to use several strokes with moderate pressure. Let the knife cut into the foam and make sure the blade is perpendicular to the cutting surface. Continue until the foam has been completely cut to the size that you need.
